THE POSTER PROJECT

The poster project — a conceptual surface for collaboration in
a zone removed from the standards of thecommercial art market,
editioned materials intended for distribution, consumption and
communication. The poster is an accessible and cheap non-
product that allows the artist to engage in social spheres beyond
the commodity producing channels of high art. An ephemeral,
lo-fi rumble in the tightly controlled easy listening airwaves…

The appeal of poster art lies in its dialectical function as both
potential countercultural tool and its classic myth building
function as in advertising and propaganda. Whether on a
teenager’s bedroom wall or wheat-pasted to the blue fence of
a construction site, or nailed to the town hall, the poster is
understood as a temporal object–an easily disposable notice
which is forced to communicate directly. The formal evolution
of poster art is a navigation of the changing sense of private/
public space.
